Around four million tonnes of bauxite a year set the rhythm at Linden, a mining town on the Demerara River some 105 km upstream from its mouth. Operated today by the Bosai Minerals Group, the port ships unprocessed ore mainly to China at a pace of one to two vessels per week. The river admits seagoing ships of roughly 5–6 m draft up to Linden, while larger parcels are completed onto ocean vessels at transhipment points such as Sand Hills. This makes Linden firmly a bulk and minerals port rather than a container or general-cargo facility. Hinterland links run by road and along the Demerara itself as an inland waterway, with no through rail freight. For containerised or general trade, Georgetown on the coast is the relevant gateway.
