About 370,000 TEU, some 4.67 million tonnes of cargo and close to 4,000 vessel calls a year make Limassol the maritime gateway for almost all of Cyprus's external trade. The container terminal is run by Eurogate, while DP World operates the multipurpose, cruise and Ro-Ro facilities under a long-term concession. Cargo spans containers, general and bulk freight and vehicles, with the port handling up to 950 units a day as the island's main Ro-Ro hub. It also serves as a support base for the eastern Mediterranean's offshore gas developments. For forwarders, Limassol offers full customs clearance and EU single-market access, with hinterland distribution entirely by road, as Cyprus has no railways. Direct deep-sea calls are limited, so much cargo is transhipped via the large Mediterranean hubs of Piraeus or Port Said. For bulk and energy products, the industrial port of Vasiliko is the domestic alternative.
