Better known for the Vendée Globe round-the-world race than for commercial shipping, Les Sables d'Olonne nonetheless runs a working cargo port on France's Bay of Biscay coast. It handles around 1 million tonnes a year (in 2021, 519 vessel calls including 155 cargo ships and 216 sand dredgers), with basins taking ships up to 110 m long and roughly 4,500 tonnes deadweight. The trade is bulk and breakbulk – imported sand and cement, plus fertiliser and grain exports – and there is no container handling. The town also hosts the leading fishing port of the Vendée by volume and value and the large Port Olona marina. Hinterland access is by road, with limited rail for bulk flows. For containerised or international liner cargo, Nantes-Saint-Nazaire and La Rochelle are the practical alternatives.
