Three transport modes meet at Leer: seagoing coasters reach the tide-free basin from the North Sea via a sea lock on the River Ems, inland barges run the Dortmund-Ems Canal to the Ruhr and the Benelux, and rail plus road complete the chain. This combined sea and inland port mainly handles dry bulk such as construction materials, iron and steel scrap, together with locally produced fertilisers and feedstuffs, plus general and project cargo. A small dry dock supports repairs. Leer is also Germany's second-largest base for shipping companies, including names such as Briese and BBC Chartering. The harbour is not a container-line port, however. For boxed traffic or larger vessels, shippers turn to Emden or Papenburg.
