Gantry cranes still line the quay, yet liner traffic has all but gone — Le Verdon is the seaward outer harbour of the Grand Port Maritime de Bordeaux at the mouth of the Gironde estuary. With about 12.5 m draught and tide-free access, this Médoc site handles bulk (including aggregates), heavy lift and RoRo such as vehicles, and can berth cruise ships of any size. Its former container terminal is effectively dormant; tenders to relaunch it came to nothing, so containerised consignments cannot be reliably handled here. An on-site free zone supports storage and transfer for industrial and project cargo. For box freight, forwarders are better served by the upriver Bassens/Bordeaux terminals, or by Montoir-de-Bretagne (Nantes-Saint-Nazaire) and La Rochelle. Customs is administered within the Bordeaux port system, but real cargo suitability today is limited to bulk, heavy-lift and RoRo.
