More than 1.2 million tonnes of cargo and over a hundred ships a year pass through Lautoka, Fiji's principal bulk port on the western side of Viti Levu. Three berths of up to eleven metres' depth handle bulk sugar, molasses, woodchips, petroleum, LPG and gas, alongside a considerable volume of containers and general cargo on vessels up to around 2,800 TEU. The Fiji Sugar Corporation and Tropik Wood run their own loading terminals here, while Fiji Ports operates the North Quay; together with Suva, Lautoka handles about 95 percent of the country's trade. As Fiji's second port of entry it offers full customs and import-export processing. Its hinterland is the western sugar belt around Nadi and Ba, linked by road and the narrow-gauge cane railway. Shippers focused purely on containers may also use Suva on the south-east coast.
