Twelve berths along the Tamar River, a draft of about 11 metres and dedicated bulk facilities make Bell Bay — not the upstream city — the working centre of the Port of Launceston. Operated by TasPorts and located on the river's eastern bank roughly 48 km north of Launceston, the port handles bulk, breakbulk and containerised cargo for northern Tasmania. Crossing the Bass Strait, the port links Tasmania to mainland Australia, with hinterland distribution by road. The shallow river channel at Launceston city itself rules out modern cargo ships there. Forwarders needing extra container or RoRo capacity in the north use Burnie and Devonport, with Hobart serving the island's south.
