Crude oil, not containers, dictates the rhythm of Las Piedras. Sitting on the western shore of the Paraguaná peninsula about 3 km south of Amuay Bay, the port works mainly as a sheltered ship-to-ship transfer area for crude tankers, supported by several small piers for coastal and naval vessels. It sits alongside the Paraguaná refinery complex — including the Amuay and Cardón refineries — one of the largest refining hubs in the world. Container, dangerous-goods breakbulk and RoRo handling are not part of the picture, and cargo suitability is confined to the petroleum sector. For Venezuela's containerised imports and exports, Puerto Cabello and La Guaira are the relevant ports, while Amuay and Punta Cardón handle further oil exports.
