At the eastern tip of Flores, where the Savu Sea narrows toward the Solor archipelago, Larantuka works as a regional ferry and inter-island cargo point rather than an international gateway. Vehicle and passenger ferries run by ASDP and Pelni connect it with Adonara, Lembata, the Solor Islands and overnight to Kupang on Timor, while general cargo, agricultural produce and consumer goods move by ship to and from Makassar. There is no container terminal or customs clearance for international freight here; wooden vessels and Ro-Ro ferries handle most of the load, and the hinterland is reached only by the coastal roads of East Flores.
