Once the largest port in northwest England, shipping cotton, sugar and spices, Glasson Dock today handles a modest but steady 150,000 tonnes of cargo a year on the River Lune estuary. Operating as the Port of Lancaster, a trust port, it is a tidal facility with two commercial river berths plus three more inside an inner dock reached through a 15-metre gate. Trade is bulk and breakbulk: imported animal feed and fertiliser stored in quayside sheds, and outbound coal for the Isle of Man and the Western Isles of Scotland. The river berths dry out at low water (NAABSA), and the port works vessels up to roughly 4,500 DWT, about 90 m length and 14 m beam. There is no container or reefer liner service here. For containerised or roll-on/roll-off freight, nearby Heysham and the Port of Liverpool are the practical alternatives.
