One of the largest natural deep-water basins in the Mediterranean, sheltered by surrounding hills, gives Lakki — the main port of the Dodecanese island of Leros — all-weather access for calling vessels. Built by the Italian administration in the 1930s as the naval base of Portolago, the harbour today centres on passenger and ro-pax ferry traffic. Routes link Lakki with Piraeus on the mainland and with Rhodes, Kos and other Dodecanese islands, as well as Samos and Ikaria, alongside two yacht marinas. Island supplies — general cargo and rolling stock — move via these ferries rather than through a dedicated freight terminal, and no standalone container or bulk facility is confirmed. Shippers handling larger volumes route through Piraeus, with Rhodes as the regional alternative.
