Unlike Maui's commercial cargo gateway at Kahului, Lahaina on the island's west coast is a small-boat harbour with no freight-handling function. The August 2023 wildfire destroyed almost all of its infrastructure and all but 13 of roughly 99 moored vessels; the harbour only reopened in December 2025 for limited tour and commercial boat operations. Shippers moving containers or interisland cargo to Maui use Kahului Harbor, served by interisland carrier Young Brothers, rather than Lahaina.
