Two terminals on the Lagos lagoon — Apapa and Tin Can Island — make NG LOS Nigeria's busiest port complex and the principal cargo gateway on the Bight of Benin in the Gulf of Guinea. APM Terminals runs the leading container facility at Apapa under concession from the Nigerian Ports Authority, while Tin Can Island handles container and roll-on/roll-off vehicle imports through operators such as Tincan Island Container Terminal (TICT, backed by Bolloré and China Merchants Port) and SIFAX. Carriers calling Lagos include Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and PIL. Nigerian ports together moved a record 129.3 million tonnes in 2025, with most of the country's containerised imports clearing through Lagos. Hinterland access is road-dominated, with the new Lagos–Ibadan standard-gauge railway and barge services intended to ease pressure. The Nigeria Customs Service handles import and export clearance. For deep-draught calls Lekki is the obvious alternative, while Tema in Ghana and Lomé in Togo compete for transhipment.
