Thailand's status as the 'Detroit of Asia' runs straight through Laem Chabang (TH LCH), the country's leading deep-sea port and one of the world's busiest vehicle-export gateways. On the Gulf of Thailand around 110 km south-east of Bangkok, it handled 9.46 million TEU in 2024, up from 8.67 million the year before, placing it roughly 20th globally. The Port Authority of Thailand runs it on a landlord basis, with terminals operated by concessionaires such as Hutchison Ports and the LCB1 group across more than twenty main berths. Depths of around 16 m allow it to work Super Post-Panamax vessels, while extensive RoRo facilities serve the automotive sector alongside container, reefer and dangerous-goods traffic. Hinterland links reach the Bangkok metropolitan area and the Eastern Economic Corridor by motorway, by State Railway of Thailand services and through inland container depots such as Lat Krabang. Thai Customs handles full international import, export and free-zone clearance on site. A Phase 3 expansion targets about 18 million TEU by 2030. Feeder or smaller consignments can route via Bangkok Port at Khlong Toei, while nearby Map Ta Phut serves petrochemicals and bulk.
