While Phase 2 of Laem Chabang's expansion is on track for completion by the third quarter of 2026 and will add roughly 5 million TEU of annual capacity, the more ambitious Phase 3 deep-water berths have slipped badly: F1, once due in 2025, is now not expected to open until 2031 after contract disputes drew senior government officials to the site. DP World underlined its long-term commitment in May 2026 by securing a five-year extension, through its Laem Chabang International Terminal (LCIT) joint venture, to run the B5 container berth until April 2031; LCIT deployed five electric internal transfer vehicles in 2025 with more planned for 2026. Thailand's largest container port, which handled 9.46 million TEU in 2024, is targeted to reach around 18 million TEU once Phase 3 is finally complete. The Port Authority of Thailand is also pushing to amend 17 related laws, six of them a priority, with a reform package due before the Cabinet by September 2026. Beyond containers, Laem Chabang remains central to Thailand's automotive export industry, with extensive ro-ro facilities handling vehicle exports alongside reefer and dangerous-goods traffic. Hinterland connections reach Bangkok and the Eastern Economic Corridor by motorway, State Railway of Thailand services and inland depots such as Lat Krabang, where Thai Customs handles full international import, export and free-zone clearance. Feeder or smaller consignments can route via Bangkok Port at Khlong Toei, while nearby Map Ta Phut serves petrochemicals and bulk.
