Manila-based terminal operator ICTSI runs the international facilities at Lae (PG LAE) under a 25-year concession, a measure of how central this port is to Papua New Guinea. Handling more than 60 percent of the country's international and coastal trade, Lae is PNG's largest and busiest port, set at the mouth of the Markham River on the Solomon Sea. The container terminal opened in 2014, complemented by a tidal basin of roughly 700 × 400 m with a 240 m multipurpose berth. Alongside containers, the port works general cargo, bulk grain and oil and gas shipments, with about 375 vessels calling each year.
