Overall cargo tonnage at La Spezia climbed to 12.62 million tonnes in 2025 (+3.3%) even as container throughput slipped 1.7% to 1.22 million TEU, with imports surging 13.9% to 5.64 million tonnes while exports fell 4% to 6.98 million tonnes. Combined with neighbouring Marina di Carrara, the two Ligurian ports handled over 1.3 million TEU and 17.45 million tonnes of goods (+2.2%) for the year. The container segment's rail share stood at about 27.8% in 2025 on 311,000 TEU moved by train, below earlier peaks; a Contship Italia investment programme aims to push it back up. At the Ravano terminal, La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) is building a new 525-metre quay with five state-of-the-art ship-to-shore cranes and a semi-automated yard, part of a EUR 200 million project due for completion in 2026 that will lift capacity toward 2.5 million TEU and let four 20,000-TEU ultra-large vessels work simultaneously. The refurbished Fornelli Est quay returned to full operation in May 2025 after extensive consolidation works. Shore-power electrification of the Molo Garibaldi was completed in mid-2025, letting ships plug in at berth. As an EU external port, La Spezia offers full customs and import-export clearance for cargo bound for the Po Valley and Alpine markets. For Swiss and south-German forwarders it remains a serious Ligurian gateway with a direct rail spine, with Genoa and Livorno as alternatives in the same corridor.
