Inaugurated in 1910 on the spit linking the coast to La Paloma island, this is Uruguay's easternmost harbour, in Rocha department. Today it functions mainly as a marina, an artisanal fishing base and the local seat of the Naval Prefecture rather than a commercial cargo port. An ambitious deep-water 'Puerto de La Paloma' hub has been proposed but is not yet built. For containers, bulk and international freight, shippers rely on Montevideo and the grain and dry-bulk port of Nueva Palmira, leaving La Paloma's cargo relevance limited for now.
