In service since 1926, the Port-Alfred facility in the La Baie borough of Saguenay is a private industrial port run by Rio Tinto for its regional aluminium operations. Its two wharves, Duncan and Powell, on Ha! Ha! Bay receive mainly bauxite, alumina, petroleum coke, caustic soda and fuel oil — feedstock for the smelters rather than containers or general cargo. About 125 vessels call each year, moving more than five million tonnes of dry bulk. A C$105 million upgrade rebuilt the Powell wharf for alumina unloading, and the terminal holds Green Marine environmental certification. Road and rail links connect the quays to the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean plants. Forwarders needing general or project cargo use Port de Saguenay's public Grande-Anse terminal, while containers route through Montreal.
