A timber-era ore dock, once advertised as among the largest in the world, is the historical highlight of L'Anse, a small harbour at the head of Keweenaw Bay on Lake Superior. The boom faded with the Panic of 1873 and an 1896 fire, and the Michigan port now sees little commercial freight, with no container, customs or scheduled services. Hinterland links run by road and the former rail corridor into the Upper Peninsula. For bulk and Great Lakes cargo, shippers rely on Marquette, Escanaba or the twin port of Duluth–Superior.
