Behind the postcard image of a Venetian castle and a horseshoe of pleasure craft, Kyrenia (Girne) handles almost no commercial freight. Passenger and vehicle ferries run from the town's New Port to Taşucu and Alanya on the Turkish mainland, the only shipping links permitted from the internationally unrecognised north of Cyprus. There is no container, bulk or third-country customs operation here; the harbour's role is essentially ferry and leisure traffic with limited cargo relevance. Hinterland access is by road across the Kyrenia range toward Nicosia (Lefkoşa). For containerised and general cargo, shippers use Famagusta (Gazimağusa) in the north, or Limassol if serving the Republic of Cyprus.
