The Kyle railway line from Inverness reaches the sea at Kyle of Lochalsh, opposite the Isle of Skye, where rail once met the Skye ferry; since the Skye Bridge opened in 1995 the ferry to Kyleakin has gone. This very small harbour, with a cargo pier around 4.9 metres deep, now serves mainly fishing, aquaculture and marine support work rather than container or liner cargo. Hinterland access is by the A87 road and the Kyle rail line. For forwarding and containerised freight across the Scottish Highlands, Inverness and the east-coast ports are the relevant gateways.
