Kwiguk – a Yup'ik word meaning roughly "big stream" – today names the Kwiguk Pass, a tidal distributary of the Yukon River, after the original village was relocated about 2 km downstream and refounded as Emmonak in 1964–65. Set some 23 km from the Bering Sea in the Yukon Delta, this is not a commercial seaport or container terminal but a remote river point serving a salmon-fishing and subsistence community with no road links. Fuel and goods arrive seasonally by river barge and by air, and a new dock at Emmonak recently received its first ocean-going container vessel. For schedulable commercial freight, seasonal Yukon barge services and the hubs at Nome and Anchorage remain the references.
