Grain, woodchips, dairy products, paper and pulp, coal and petroleum make up the cargo mix at Kushiro Ko, the principal commercial harbour on the Pacific coast of eastern Hokkaido. The Kushiro River splits the port in two: the East Harbour handles coal and general cargo and anchors the fishing industry, while the deeper West Harbour specialises in grain, woodchips, dairy, paper and pulp, and oil products. Dedicated coal and grain loaders and woodchip distributors supplement the cranes. Designated an international strategic bulk port for grain in 2011, Kushiro moves around 23 million tonnes of cargo a year, with a container terminal rated at roughly 150,000 TEU. Hinterland distribution runs over eastern Hokkaido's road and rail network. For heavier container-line and ferry traffic, Tomakomai on the island's south coast remains the stronger alternative.
