Few Japanese ports are as defined by shipbuilding as Kure, on Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea. Home to the naval arsenal that launched the battleship Yamato in 1940, its yard still builds merchant ships and oil tankers for export, and the surrounding coastal belt hosts steel, machinery and pulp industries that ship through dedicated berths. Depths of around 17 metres, a large dry dock and major repair capacity suit bulk carriers, tankers and project-cargo parcels. Commercial throughput is split across separate container, dry-bulk and liquid terminals, though container volumes remain modest. Road and rail across Hiroshima Prefecture handle hinterland distribution, with no inland-waterway role. Kure also hosts a base of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). For scheduled container services, nearby Hiroshima and the larger gateway of Kobe are the practical alternatives.
