Hyundai's Jeonju plant and the Tata Daewoo commercial-vehicle works feed Kunsan (KR KUV), also written Gunsan, with export vehicles that define much of its traffic, near the mouth of the Geum River on South Korea's west coast. Beyond Ro-Ro car berths, the port runs a grain pier, cement and petroleum facilities, bulk berths and two newer container berths, handling dry bulk, breakbulk, LPG and forest products. A free trade zone and the adjacent Saemangeum reclamation scheme underpin its industrial base. Road and rail carry cargo inland across North Jeolla Province. It is a regional port complementing, rather than rivalling, Korea's main box terminals. For large container volumes, Busan and Incheon are the usual alternatives.
