Some 90 kilometres of subsea pipeline and a single point mooring set in roughly 25 metres of water define the Kumul Marine Terminal in the Gulf of Papua, a dedicated crude oil export point rather than a general cargo or container port. Commingled Kutubu Blend crude from the onshore Kutubu fields is pumped directly into export tankers, with the manned Kumul platform handling pressure reduction, flow control and custody transfer. The terminal operates within Papua New Guinea's state oil interests under Kumul Petroleum Holdings, and it offers no container, RoRo or breakbulk handling. There is no road or rail hinterland connection; the only feed is the highland pipeline. An FSO unit with a minimum storage capacity of 800,000 barrels is scheduled to support loading from 2028. Shippers moving conventional freight to Papua New Guinea should route via Port Moresby or Lae.
