Part of the combined Tokuyama-Kudamatsu Port on the Seto Inland Sea, Kudamatsu (JP KUD) serves the Shunan industrial complex in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its quays are geared to industry rather than containers: the site includes a coal transshipment terminal handling imported coal, including cargoes from Newcastle, Australia. The adjoining Hitachi Kasado Works builds railway rolling stock for domestic and export markets, shipped as project and break-bulk cargo. Hinterland links run by road and via the nearby Sanyō main rail line. With deep, sheltered water it suits bulk carriers and industrial shipments rather than liner trades. For containerised freight, shippers generally route through Hiroshima or Kobe.
