Indonesia built Kuala Tanjung to keep North Sumatran boxes out of Singapore and Port Klang, and the deep-water terminal on the Strait of Malacca is the clearest expression of that ambition. Phase one offers roughly 500 metres of quay and an initial capacity near 600,000 TEU, with depth for large container vessels alongside the KTMT multipurpose terminal (PT Prima Multi Terminal). State operator Pelindo leads the project, with DP World and the Port of Rotterdam brought in as technical partners. The adjacent Inalum aluminium smelter feeds steady traffic — imported alumina in, ingots out — while palm oil (CPO) from the interior adds bulk volume. A wider industrial estate and special economic zone are planned to pair manufacturing with cargo handling on site. Road links serve the hinterland toward Medan, with a rail connection planned. For now, conventional Belawan near Medan remains the reference for customs and established liner calls, and Singapore and Port Klang still hold the large transshipment flows.
