Two quays define cargo work at Kristinestad (Kristiinankaupunki) on the Gulf of Bothnia: a 250-metre stone quay with about 5.6 metres of draught and a 75-metre wooden quay (around 4.6 m), together handling dry cargo, RoRo and tanker parcels. Exports are dominated by sawn timber and wood products, while imports centre on coal, coke and petrol. Around 35 vessels totalling some 300,000 GT call each year. The shallow draught limits calls to smaller coasters and feeder vessels, and the port offers no scheduled container-line services. Ice usually closes the port from late December to about mid-April, though the oil harbour can stay open longer. Inland distribution runs over the roads of southern Ostrobothnia; a dedicated rail link to the quay is not confirmed. For containerised consignments or larger forest-product exports, nearby Kaskinen (Kaskö) is the specialised alternative, with Vaasa to the north for general cargo.
