Three piers organise the work at Kralendijk, the main port of the Caribbean island of Bonaire: a north pier for general cargo and containers, a south pier for fuel and bulk, and berths that take cruise ships within walking distance of town. Annual throughput is modest at around 2,800 TEU, some 23,000 tonnes of general cargo and roughly 17,400 cruise passengers. The port functions as the island's supply gateway, handling container, breakbulk and fuel consignments. On Bonaire's north coast, the separate BOPEC terminal stores and transships crude oil and can receive very large tankers, though its activity has been limited in recent years. Hinterland reach is island-wide and entirely by road. For larger container volumes or transhipment, the nearby hubs of Willemstad on Curaçao and Oranjestad on Aruba are the obvious alternatives.
