Finland's single largest universal port, HaminaKotka was formed in 2011 by merging the harbours of Kotka and Hamina. Its Mussalo terminal is the country's leading container facility, with capacity in the order of 1.5 million TEU and round-the-clock operation; it handled about 474,000 TEU in the first nine months of 2025. Forest products — sawn timber, wood pulp and paper — have traditionally made up about half of export tonnage, much of it shipped in containers. The port also runs liquid- and dry-bulk terminals alongside ro-ro and lo-lo facilities for breakbulk and rolling cargo. At Hamina, an LNG terminal adds regasification, LNG bunkering for ships and, since 2024, biogas liquefaction. Long rail sidings and warehouses tie the quays to Finland's forestry and chemical industries inland. Mussalo was long the principal transit port for Russia, a business that has shifted markedly since sanctions from 2022. For forwarders, HaminaKotka is the first port of call for Finnish container, forest and project cargo, with Helsinki-Vuosaari serving consumer goods and Rauma offering an alternative for forest products.
