Cargo volumes at HaminaKotka, Finland's largest universal port, fell to 6.31 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, down 11.4% year on year, as new CEO Eija Rossi took charge of the port company from January 2026. Container throughput held up better, with the Mussalo terminal handling 327,379 TEU in H1 2026, only about 1% below the same period a year earlier, out of a terminal capacity near 1.5 million TEU. Exports slid to 4.30 million tonnes (-14%), hit by weaker dry- and liquid-bulk, sawn timber, wood pulp and paper volumes, while imports eased 5.3% to 2.01 million tonnes even as dry-bulk imports rose 14.9%. Forest products still account for roughly half of export tonnage, much of it containerised. The port also runs liquid- and dry-bulk terminals alongside ro-ro and lo-lo facilities for breakbulk and rolling cargo. At Hamina, an LNG terminal handles regasification, ship bunkering and, since 2024, biogas liquefaction. Mussalo was long Russia's principal transit port, a business reshaped by sanctions since 2022 and a factor behind the current softness in volumes. For forwarders, HaminaKotka remains the first port of call for Finnish container, forest and project cargo, with Helsinki-Vuosaari serving consumer goods and Rauma an alternative for forest products.
