Four berths and some 500 metres of quay give the Sapangar Bay Container Port a present capacity of about 500,000 TEU; a roughly RM1 billion upgrade is doubling the quay to around 1 km, deepening the approach from 12 to 15 m and doubling quay cranes to eight, lifting capacity to 1.25 million TEU and anchoring Sabah's role as a transhipment point for the BIMP-EAGA growth area (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines), with completion now slipped to 2026. Operated by DP World Sabah on the north-west coast of Borneo, it is the principal container facility of the Malaysian state of Sabah, facing the South China Sea. The older Kota Kinabalu Port handles general cargo, dry bulk, RoRo and cruise traffic, while the Sapangar Bay Oil Terminal manages petroleum products. Mainline reach comes through feeder links to Port Klang and Singapore, where Sabah's boxes join intercontinental services. Containerised exports centre on palm-oil products, timber and agricultural goods, with consumer and capital goods dominating imports. Hinterland haulage runs over Sabah's west-coast roads; with no significant rail network, drayage is almost entirely by truck. Customs and import-export formalities are processed by the Royal Malaysian Customs. For destinations in eastern Sabah, Sandakan and Tawau are the closer alternative ports.
