On the shore of Aniva Bay at the southern end of Sakhalin Island, Korsakov is the largest seaport in Russia's Sakhalin region, kept open year-round and around the clock with icebreaker support. Its eleven berths handle coal, timber, minerals, grain, steel, cellulose, paper and a limited volume of containers, reflecting the island's resource and forestry economy. Ferry and freight services link Korsakov with Vladivostok, South Korea and the Kuril Islands. A major redevelopment into a deep-water port with a large container terminal and a fuel refinery has been announced but is not yet built, so forwarders should confirm current capacity on a project basis. Inland distribution runs mainly by road to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and over the island's rail network.
