Shikoku's paper and timber industries shape cargo at Komatsushima, on the eastern coast of the island in Tokushima Prefecture. The port acts as an import base for paper-making raw materials and a supply point for unprocessed timber, handled in the Akaishi district at a 13-metre-deep quay for wood-chip and bulk ships alongside a 10-metre container berth that anchors the area's foreign trade. Part of the combined Tokushima-Komatsushima Port, it runs the only regular ferry link from Shikoku to Tokyo. The Kii Channel opens the port to the Pacific and to the Kansai economic region. Inland, Shikoku connects to the Japanese mainland by road and bridge networks. For larger container volumes, forwarders turn to the nearby ports of Kobe and Osaka.
