Iron pellets, ores and concentrates, fertilisers and oil products set the rhythm at Kokkola, Finland's largest port for dry bulk and its third-biggest multipurpose port. The port handled 3.98 million tonnes in 2024, up 6% year on year, with ores and concentrates alone at about 1.06 million tonnes. Its Deep Port, whose fairway has been dredged to take 14-metre drafts, is built to move some 7 million tonnes a year on its own and anchors the heavy raw-material trade for the chemical-metallurgical industry. In early 2025 the port commissioned one of Finland's largest container gantry cranes, more than doubling its container capacity — though boxes remain a side business from a small base. General cargo such as sawn timber, zinc and palletised goods moves through the General Port, while dedicated rail sidings and road links tie the quays to inland industry. Kokkola was historically Finland's main transit port for Russian cargo — zinc concentrate, oil, iron pellets and limestone — a flow much changed since sanctions from 2022. Shippers with bulk, minerals or project cargo are well served here; containerised consignments are better routed via HaminaKotka (Mussalo) or Helsinki-Vuosaari.
