K Line took over terminals PC14–17 on the southern pier of Port Island Stage 2 on 1 September 2026, lifting the Kobe International Container Terminal's (KICT) quay length from 1,050 to 1,750 metres and making it one of Japan's largest container terminals in a single step. KICT will now handle close to 40% of Kobe's international container cargo, backed by twelve new electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes operable remotely from a dedicated control building. The port processed around 2.8 million TEU in 2024 and 174,728 TEU in May 2026 alone, Japan's fourth-busiest container port. Alongside boxes, Kobe works over 100 million tonnes of total cargo a year: breakbulk, RoRo vehicle traffic and industrial exports from the greater Osaka region, with full customs clearance and reefer and dangerous-goods handling. Since July 2025 the CONPAS system lets carriers book delivered export containers directly, bypassing agents. Together with Osaka, Kobe forms the Hanshin port grouping connecting western Japan to mainline container services. For Kansai-bound shipments, Osaka is the nearest option; Nagoya and Yokohama serve a broader catchment.
