Livestock, hides, bananas and citrus make up the bulk of what leaves Kismaayo, the gateway port for southern Somalia's Lower Juba region, with charcoal historically shipped out despite a United Nations export ban that makes it a sensitive cargo. On the import side the port handles containers, general cargo, roll-on/roll-off traffic and bulk, supported by a container freight station. Two berths of 340 and 280 metres and two RoRo ramps take vessels up to roughly 180 metres with a draft near 8 metres. Hinterland movement is almost entirely by road, as there is no rail network. Somalia's security and customs situation is volatile and should be verified before booking; Mogadishu and the Kenyan port of Mombasa are the usual alternatives.
