JFE Steel's East Japan Works anchors cargo activity at Kisarazu, drawing in raw materials and shipping out finished steel through the port's berths in Chiba Prefecture. The throughput is dominated by industrial bulk and breakbulk: iron ore, coal, steel products, automobiles, liquefied gas and lumber serving the surrounding steel, chemical and timber plants. A dredged approach of around 18 metres lets the port accept very large bulk carriers, and a roll-on/roll-off service handles vehicle traffic. Hinterland links run through the dense road and rail grid of the greater Tokyo area, including the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. This is not a container-line gateway, so for deep-sea boxes shippers turn to Yokohama, Tokyo or Chiba nearby.
