Few Red Sea ports carry the energy weight of King Fahd Industrial Port (Mina Al Malik Fahd) at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia's largest outlet for crude, refined products and petrochemicals, with 34 berths and capacity of around 210 million tonnes a year. Commissioned in 1980, its terminals span crude oil, NGL and LPG, chemical and refinery products and a general-cargo and container terminal, covering containers, dry bulk, general cargo and RoRo. Crude reaches the port through the 1,200 km East–West (Petroline) pipeline from Abqaiq, a deliberate alternative to the Strait of Hormuz; after companion NGL lines were converted, its capacity reached about 7 million barrels a day in 2026. Crude handling at the port typically runs 1.3 to 1.5 million barrels per day, supplemented by the Yanbu South Terminal opened in 2018, which added roughly 3 million bpd across five loading berths. Proximity to the Suez Canal and Bab al-Mandab ties it into the Far East–Europe–North America routes. Pure container traffic is generally better served by Jeddah Islamic Port. For industrial, project and petrochemical shipments tied to the Yanbu complex, however, this is the principal Red Sea gateway.
