Built in 1969 and ranked as Papua New Guinea's third-largest port, Kimbe handles roughly 75% of the country's crude palm oil exports from its position on Stettin Bay, an inlet of Kimbe Bay. Operated by PNG Ports Corporation, its cargo pier offers around 11 m alongside depth and serves parcel tankers loading palm oil as well as container and general-cargo vessels. The hinterland of West New Britain links the quay by road to the large oil-palm estates whose output — worth about PGK1 billion a year — drives most traffic. A redevelopment scheme launched in 2025, backed by Australia's AIFFP with over US$64 million, aims to lift annual throughput above 600,000 tonnes by 2050. Forwarders moving full container loads or heavy breakbulk will still find Lae, PNG's largest port, better equipped, with Rabaul serving as a regional alternative.
