De-icing rock salt is the cargo that defines Kilroot: from a dedicated deep-water jetty on the northern shore of Belfast Lough, the Irish Salt Mining & Exploration Company ships out around 500,000 tonnes a year from the Carrickfergus mine. This makes the port essentially a specialised salt-export berth rather than a container or general-cargo facility. The site is also shaped by the adjacent Kilroot power station, whose coal-fired operation ended in 2023 in favour of gas turbines; historically, colliers of up to 8,000 tonnes discharged at the jetty. Rail and the County Antrim road network link the point to the Northern Irish hinterland. For containers, ro-ro ferries and conventional breakbulk, Belfast, Larne and Warrenpoint are the practical alternatives.
