Opened in the 1850s and trading schooners of coal, grain and granite with Liverpool and Scotland in its early years, Kilkeel long ago shed that general-cargo role and today works almost entirely as a fishing harbour. It is home to Northern Ireland's largest fishing fleet, with herring, prawns and whitefish landed and auctioned on the quay and processed in factories ringing the basins. The man-made harbour is constrained by a narrow entrance dredged to only about 1.0 metre, which rules out modern cargo vessels. Road links through the Mourne district carry the catch inland, but there is no rail connection and no container or customs infrastructure on site. Shippers needing boxes, breakbulk or customs clearance use Warrenpoint and Belfast, both around an hour away by road. For commercial freight beyond seafood, Kilkeel's relevance is limited.
