Operated by ENEOS, formerly JX Nippon Oil & Energy, the Kiire terminal near Kagoshima is one of the world's largest crude-oil storage bases. In service since 1969, its 58 tanks hold more than 46 million barrels, and the facility handles the import, storage and transfer of crude and fuel oil rather than containers or general cargo. Deep water lets it work tankers from medium-range vessels up to ultra-large crude carriers with 24-hour loading. Its position closer to Japanese refineries than Okinawa makes it strategically important for supply security, and in 2022 Saudi Aramco arranged to store crude here. Shippers with boxed or conventional freight in the Kagoshima area should use the port of Kagoshima instead.
