General cargo and copra are the staples of Kieta, a small harbour on the north-east coast of Bougainville Island sheltered by Bakawari Island offshore. Once the export outlet for the vast Panguna copper mine, the port lost that traffic when the mine closed in 1989 amid the Bougainville conflict. It handles overseas and coastal vessels up to about 12,000 GT; with no wharf cranes, mobile units lift containers up to 20 tonnes, supported by 2,780 m² of covered and 14,200 m² of open storage. For containerised imports or larger volumes, forwarders generally route Bougainville cargo through Lae or Rabaul. Kieta's freight role today is regional and limited.
