Twenty berths line the port of Al Khums (Khoms), of which five handle conventional cargo, three are dedicated to containers and the rest serve oil, petroleum and chemicals. Located about 120 km east of Tripoli, it is one of Libya's genuine commercial ports rather than a pure oil terminal. The container terminal is rated at up to 250,000 TEU a year; in 2017 it received 445 ships and handled around 49,000 TEU plus some 80,000 tonnes of bulk. Cargoes range from boxes and vehicles to livestock, construction materials and consumer goods, supported by roughly 530 reefer points and cold storage. The Libyan Ports Company operates the facility, with road links along the coastal highway toward Tripoli and Misrata. For larger container volumes or regular liner calls, Tripoli and Misrata offer greater capacity.
