Where mainland Russia's rail network meets Sakhalin's, the connection is not a bridge but a ship: Kholmsk is the island terminal of the Vanino–Kholmsk train ferry. Across the 260 km of the Tatar Strait, loaded railway wagons roll directly onto the ferries, an operation run by the Sakhalin Shipping Company (SASCO) with a three-vessel fleet as of 2022. The crossing alone moved around 5.8 million tonnes a year, making the port chiefly a roll-on/roll-off and rail-ferry gateway rather than a box terminal. As an ice-free harbour with two terminals, three railway stations and a highway interchange, it ranks as the largest transport node on Sakhalin. Containerised and conventional general-cargo flows for the island are usually handled at Korsakov in the south, while Sovetskaya Gavan supplements Vanino on the mainland side.
