Around 1.2 million tonnes crossed Kherson's quays in 2018, roughly 80 percent of it export traffic — a figure that now belongs to the port's past rather than its present. Set where the Dnipro River meets the Dnipro-Bug estuary, the port historically specialised in dry bulk: grain accounted for about 40 percent of throughput, mineral fertilisers and chemicals in bulk and bales for another 40 percent, alongside sand, scrap and sawn timber. Its single handling area offers a 1,262 m berthing line and a grain terminal backed by a 20,000-tonne warehouse, against a nominal capacity of 8 million tonnes a year. Following the 2022 Russian occupation the facilities were looted and heavily damaged by shelling, and regular commercial operation is not confirmed. Forwarders routing Ukrainian grain or fertiliser cargo currently rely on the Danube ports of Izmail and Reni or on Constanța in Romania.
