Bulk, breakbulk, project cargo and liquid products such as fuel oil, asphalt and naphtha move across the berths of Khor al-Zubair, about 18 km downstream of Umm Qasr in southern Iraq. Despite the 'LNG terminal' label, this is primarily an industrial and dry-bulk port serving the surrounding petrochemical, fertiliser and iron-and-steel plants. A multi-purpose berth also handles containers, though boxes are not its main trade; annual throughput runs near 400,000 tonnes of cargo plus roughly 1.44 million tonnes of liquid fuel products. Inland connections rely on road and the southern Iraqi rail network toward Basra. Pure container shippers are better served by neighbouring Umm Qasr, while crude exporters use the offshore ABOT and KAAOT terminals.
