Khalifa Bin Salman (BH KBS), also Mina Khalifa, is Bahrain's main commercial port, handling around 400,000 TEU a year (up about 3% in 2024). It sits at Hidd in the north-east of the island state next to its industrial and logistics zones. Since opening in 2009 it has become the country's central maritime gateway and a regional transhipment point in the Persian Gulf. The facility is run by APM Terminals Bahrain as a multipurpose port handling containers, general cargo, RoRo, dry bulk and cruise, with major lines such as Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and COSCO calling regularly. The container terminal covers around 900,000 m² with a designed annual capacity of about 1.4 million TEU, four post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes, rubber-tyred gantry cranes and extensive reefer points. Channel and berth depths around 14 m allow large container and multipurpose vessels to call. The King Fahd Causeway gives a direct road link to Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province some 55 km away, while the international airport is about 13 km off. As regional alternatives for transhipment and containers, Jebel Ali (Dubai) and Dammam in Saudi Arabia stand out.
