Rebuilt after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami swept through its waterfront, Kesennuma Ko (JPKSN) has reclaimed its place among Japan's leading fishing ports on the Sanriku coast of Miyagi Prefecture. One of the country's 13 nationally designated fishing harbours, it has long recorded Japan's highest landings of fresh bonito, and also handles tuna, swordfish, Pacific saury and shark. As a home port for pelagic fleets and a major processing centre, its freight base is seafood rather than containers. Restored quays, a landmark fish market and extensive cold-storage capacity underpin that role. For forwarders, Kesennuma is relevant mainly for chilled and frozen seafood flows, while containerised industrial cargo moves through the nearby commercial port of Sendai-Shiogama. The Sanriku Expressway carries hinterland road traffic.
